Months after the fall of Sokovia, the world is still trying to find its footing. Smoke still rises from cities in ruin and entire nations point fingers at each other, desperate to place blame. The world is quiet, but they have not forgotten. People are restless. They hold their breath as fear spreads faster than truth and the idea of "heroes" no longer feels safe. There's whispers of a new organization rising as well. One that promises to pick up where the Avengers are leaving behind right now as they choose their sides.

The story follows a hostile meeting between Doctor Doom and his heroic 2099 counterpart, which causes a "timestream entanglement" that leads to new worlds being created and heroes and villains from across the multiverse to fight one another to defeat both Doom variants before one claims victory over the new worlds.

Welcome to the Thunderbolts! A (formerly) clandestine paramilitary superhero force who do the tough jobs everyone else is either too afraid to do, or too worried about messing up.

Originally formed by la Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, and trained as a highly skilled secret operations Task Force, the group has grown steadily over the years, and has recently emerged from the shadows after being the sole saviors of an event known as the New York Blackout.

But not everyone is happy about this new development. Many members of the public still need to be convinced that the Thunderbolts are anything more than soldiers and murderers. And even some members of the team question Valentina's decision for them to embrace the limelight they've been thrust into.
